The music of Mwenso and the Shakes is based in messages of empowerment, overcoming and resilience. Anchored in African music, blues, funk, and spiritual, in the right context their concerts can feel like a church service. The illustrated characters at the heart of the system I developed are in the throws of their shake. There’s a struggle being worked out in their movement, a catharsis.
